A Peaceful Canal Walk–Run–Walk Session: Building Fitness Through Enjoyable Training
A peaceful canal walk–run–walk session from Market Drayton to Tyrley Lock shows how enjoyable routes, active recovery, and consistent training can help build fitness while enjoying the outdoors.
A Peaceful Walk–Run–Walk Session Along the Canal
Some training sessions stand out because of the route, the surroundings, and the simple enjoyment of being outdoors. This morning’s walk–run–walk session was one of those days, covering 11.98 km in 1:28:09 along a favourite route from Market Drayton to Tyrley Lock.
After a short warm-up walk, I started the running section along the canal towpath, enjoying the quiet surroundings and the change of scenery that makes this route so enjoyable. Once I reached Tyrley Lock, I switched to a 5.98 km walk back as active recovery.
The canal is one of my favourite places to run. Away from traffic, surrounded by nature, and with plenty of wildlife along the way, every session feels slightly different. The ducks, birds, and peaceful views make it more than just a workout—it becomes time to enjoy the outdoors.
The towpath also adds an extra challenge. The surface changes throughout the route, requiring focus and adapting your stride, but it still allows for a strong and consistent effort. During the running section, I was pleased to record my fastest kilometre at 4:42/km.
At 58 years old, it’s rewarding to see that consistent training and enjoying the process can continue to bring progress.
The canal also provides welcome shade on warmer mornings, and the walk back from the turnaround point offers the perfect opportunity to recover while staying active. Sessions like this are a great way to build fitness, support overall health, and spend time outside.
